Why an impound lot in California partnered with Dash ATM

When Dan reached out to Dash ATM he was reaching a breaking point.

In the last two weeks his impound lot had three individuals verbally assault his employees. Each experience had almost caused him to call the cops.

In some ways, this is understandable. Most people are at their worst after realizing their car has been towed and having to take an Uber to go retrieve it.

To make matters worse, Dan’s impound lot is cash only. While this is fairly standard in the towing industry, customers were showing up unaware that they need to have a significant volume of cash ($200+) to retrieve their vehicle. I mean, put yourself in their shoes… After already Ubering once to get to the impound lot, they then had to Uber to a nearby bank, and finally take a THIRD Uber back to the impound lot.

All said and done, they were paying for more than three Ubers and then still had to pay to get their car back.

Dan realized that not having an ATM on site was a recipe for disaster. Customers were already showing up emotional and angry - this is normal for any impound lot. However, requiring cash and not having an ATM on site was like adding fuel to the fire. It made customers livid.

“You see a lot of angry people owning a towing company for 20 years. These customers were by far the angriest. Not having an ATM was becoming a risk”

After signing a 48 month placement agreement with Dash ATM, we mobilized and got ready to install our machine.

The catch?

The impound lot was managed from an RV trailer. ATM theft is a huge concern and we always bolt our machines to the floor.

In this case, there really wasn’t a floor. The RV was retrofitted to look like a building, but was still a vehicle.

Our team was committed to making things work and found a solution.

How did we do it? We welded a thick piece of galvanized steel underneath the RV. This allowed us to drill through the floor and anchor the ATM on a solid foundation.

The ATM was basically impenetrable. Unless someone stole the entire RV, that thing was going absolutely nowhere.

“I don’t think most companies would’ve gone through the trouble Dash ATM did to install the machine”

Since then, the machine has seen significant and steady use. Fridays and Saturdays are its busiest days and it averages around 110 withdrawals a month.

The business value for Dan is priceless. This is 110 customers that have a more frictionless and convenient experience retrieving their car.

Dan has noticed a significant decrease in what he calls, “threatening incidents”.

While his customers will never truly be “happy” in the way that most businesses want, they lean more towards “disgruntled” when using the ATM as opposed to “irate” when realizing there isn’t a convenient way to access cash. He’s happy with the improvement in disposition and feels his employees are working in a safer environment.
